Let’s face it. Most hairdressers are not the best walking advertisements for their talents.
Although they may have been a star pupil at their local beauty school, somewhere along the way they failed to work the same magic on their own head of hair. Which brings up the question – Should you go to a hairdresser with bad hair?
When considering this crucial question, it’s important to look at the issue from several perspectives. First, did this “bad hairdresser” with the spiked pixie haircut and pink highlights actually cut her own hair or did one of her fellow salon mates do the job? If the latter is the case, there may still be hope that she may do a perfectly acceptable job cutting your hair. With such easy access to other hair care professionals, a hairdresser might very well ask another hair stylist to cut her hair, even though she conceivably has the ability to do her own.
Another possibility is that the prospective hairdresser may have received her rather unconventional haircut as a result of visiting a hair show. At these events, it’s not uncommon for hairdressers to serve as guinea pigs for new hair cuts, hairstyles, and coloring jobs. She may have been generous enough to sacrifice her own head of hair for the good of hairstyling science. In this case, you can give her points for benevolence as well as courage. There’s also the possibility that a brand new hairdresser needed someone to practice on, and this kind soul was willing to sacrifice her hair to further the education of a new hair stylist. Just make sure your hair doesn’t end up in the hands of this “new” stylist.
Nevertheless, it may be fair to give a hairdresser with bad hair a chance to cut your hair if she seems knowledgeable and sincere. After all, the number of hairdressers with bad hair appears to be high, so there’s no way they could all be bad. Just make sure you go through the hairstyle books with her and carefully point out the type of cut you’re looking for, making sure to avoid any haircuts that’ll make you look like a teenager gone Goth. Good communication is the key here.
One final pointer, if you enter a hair salon and every one of the hairdressers is wearing a funky, distorted, haircut and you notice the customers are too, run, don’t walk, out of the salon before one of the funky haired hairdresser steers her scissors in your direction. You don’t want to be one of this hair salon’s latest victims.
The bottom line? It’s not unreasonable to give a hairdresser with bad hair the opportunity to cut your hair, but be sure there’s good communication before she picks up those scissors or that bottle of hair coloring or you could be the customer who walks out with bad hair. And you don’t want that.
